good news but there's still an "investigation" going

Well, we got the final report from Grayson's gastroenterologist today. All of his blood work and stool samples came back good. That's great news! But in another way, we would like something to be found (nothing major of course) because we truly feel there's an issue. Grayson's eating, how he takes food in, and how it gets processed just isn't right. We just can't seem to put our finger on what isn't right...so far, not even with the help of specialists. The situation is frustrating to all of us - me, Ray, and of course, poor Grayson. We want to get him straightened out as soon as possible. We don't like him feeling the way he has been for quite some time now.
.
The next step is a swallowing evaluation tomorrow at a pediatric imaging center. Grayson will be put in a chair and given different substances (liquids and solids I think). As he puts them in his mouth, chews them, probably holds them there a while, and swallows them, a video x-ray will be taken. This test will allow the specialists to see and analyze exactly what's going on. If something isn't right, they will make recommendations on how to fix whatever is going on in the form of a report to G's gastroenterologist.
.
The appointment is at 9:30 am. The bad thing is that Grayson can have nothing to eat or drink before the appointment. That's because they want him to be willing to drink and eat what they give him for the test. As you can imagine, Ray and I are a little nervous about it. Feeding Grayson is never really a pleasant experience as it is. But being in a different environment with new people around will really make it...um, interesting, to say the least.
.
Our gastroenterologist also referred us to Our Children's House of Baylor for a feeding evaluation. Unfortunately, there is a long wait for an appointment. The soonest I could get one was in mid November. But I also have us down on the cancellation list. This appointment is very thorough. I was told to expect it to last at least 2 1/2 hours. During that time, the following will be part of the team evaluating Grayson's eating: a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, a dietitian/nutritionist, and a psychologist. The each have their own part of the evaluation. I suppose they will have an individual and a collective opinion on what could be going on.
.
If it were our choice, Grayson wouldn't have to endure any of this. But we need to get him figured out so he can eat and enjoy foods the way a year and a half old should. There's no doubt he is suffering (maybe not in his weight - the doctor says it's perfect but in how his body takes in and processes food). Although the doctor told Ray and I were are doing an awesome job, that Gray is in excellent health, we want to ensure that continues. Considering Grayson feels the way he does, isn't too cooperative when it comes to food, and we are working with such a limited number of foods, continuing to do a good job keeping him well nourished and in good health will only become more difficult as he grows and develops. That is the very reason why finding out what's going on and getting it fixed as soon as possible is at the top of our to do list.
.
We are happy all of G's blood work and stool samples came back normal. That rules out the biggest possible problems. We are looking forward to meeting more people who can help us - starting tomorrow.
.
With all this medical talk, I might as well give an update on Gray's cold. We think it's preparing for it's final exit. But that doesn't happen overnight. It seems to be taking it's time. Although, we are in high hopes it is gone in the next few days. And if it wants to be gone tomorrow morning when we wake up, we're fine with that too! ;)
.
Gray just could not take Aldex, the medicine the doctor gave us. The flavor and the consistency make him throw up every time. It happens the moment it goes in his mouth...it doesn't get a chance to go down his throat - much less reach his stomach. After trying a few times and getting the same result, we completely stopped that medicine. If he throws up what little food he takes in, that creates a whole new problem. So, we've been giving him Benadryl to help him feel better. The doctor said it will help clear his head and make him rest better. And that's exactly what he needs until the cold is gone. I must also credit the cool mist humidifier, mine and Ray's efforts to keep him clean, comfortable, and happy, Mimi for making frequent visits that are always a feel good for Grayson, and last but not least, Barney. :)
